Budkins from Le Toy Van – why I love them…and why you will too.

Wednesday, September 14th, 2011

I have a special little soft spot for the Budkins characters from Le Toy Van. Perhaps it was the hours spent getting to know each one of the little wooden dolls house characters, huddled around me expectantly so I could accurately describe them for the website that did it……Whatever it was, I can happily say that they are not difficult to become enchanted with. Budkins dolls are a perfect handfull size of 10 cm, large enough for the fantastic individual detailing that they are renown for, but small enough for adventurous dolls house play.

The range of characters is enormous, to call them ‘dolls house characters’ seems unfairly restrictive, from farmer, farmers wife and stable hand to historical Budkins like the great Henry VIII. Far from being limited to a pretty classic dolls house, these characters all have Le Toy Van buildings or vehicles and even playmats that would complement their theme. Abdul the pirate Budkin , for example, is most happy when plotting the course of his ship, the Barborossa and Josh, the patient would struggle to get to the hospital if an ambulance wasn’t there in his hour of need.

All the Budkins characters are made from sustainable wood with fair trading at every stage. The arms and legs are bendable for posing the characters and are strong enough to stand. Their hair is woollen and their fabric clothing has wonderful detailing. The Budkins fairies or princesses have the most wonderful dresses and headdresses with layers of silk and chiffon looking fabric and sparkling sequins hidden in the layers.  Archibald the Archer and the knight characters even have realistic looking armour and chain mail.

The wonderful quality of the Budkins characters is their flexibility in play. Pair Amy the schoolgirl with the teacher Mrs Davis, or help her board the wonderful red double decker bus to take her home from school. She may pass a construction site on her way and wave to one of the workers, CharlieBilly the Cowboy on the other hand would be happier in Rattlesnake Wooden fort after an disagreement with Indian Chief Bearclaw at the Cherokee Tepee. Whatever era of history or fantasy ignites the imagination of your little storyteller, be it Medieval, Viking, Roman or Hammer Horror you can be sure that there will be a cluster of friendly little Budkins ready to help act out a tale.

The John Crane range at PlayMerrily has always been held in high regard. The quality and uniqueness of the toys and games have always received positive feedback, so we have been delighted to expand the brand and include  GoGo, Pintoy, Branching Out and Tidlo.

Pintoy Medieval Castle With Mound

Pintoy Classic Wooden Sink & Stove

If medieval fortresses aren’t for you, the wooden kitchen range just might be. From realistic dishwashers (don’t you just love that sliding plate stacker!) to classic all in one utility islands. Although my absolute favourite has to be the retro chic Tidlo red kitchen station with it’s cute silver and white tile splashback detail and towel rail.

Pintoy Doll's Bunk Beds

Pintoy Doll's Bunk Beds

The Pintoy range includes wooden dolls furniture and accessories that have been designed to be as realistic as possible. This pretty wooden dolls bunk bed even separates into 2 single doll beds. For your emergency vehicle enthusiast the Pintoy Fire Engine or Fire Station are sure to impress. The fire engine has extending and rotating ladders, hoses and removable roof and the fire station comes with all the accessories your little firefighter will need for emergency role play.

The GoGo wooden toy range is one of the most exciting educational ranges I have seen. The wonderful Happy Birds sequencing toy is a perfect example of this. The classic educational sequencing and matching concept is combined with quirky little bird characters to be built up using a little perching branch and magnetic wings, head and tail.

The great theme that occurs throughout the John Crane range of toys is the educational value disguised through play. The High Tea Shape matching cake stand from the Tidlo range is a fantastic example of this. The attention to detail on the little cakes and the doily patterning on the cake stand will delight any little hostess and the numbers on the base of the cakes and cake stand encourage matching and sorting.

New Roads! Great new range of Wooden Roadway from Bigjigs

Monday, June 20th, 2011

Bigjigs range of Wooden Railway have been hugely popular, and it’s easy to see why. The wide range of buildings, accessories and trains that are compatible with leading train track brands, mean that a train set can easily and affordably be updated and expanded to create unique and imaginative routes.

So we are very excited that this design has now extended to a wooden roadway system that can either link up to a railway using a level crossing, or be used alone to build towns and cities.

The superb attention to daily life that we have come to love from Bigjigs is evident in the smaller accessories such as the parking spaces set and the zebra crossing set, which not only make the roadway realistic, but also provide a great role play opportunity to talk about road safety with children.

Bigjigs Wooden Roadway - Parking Spaces Set

Bigjigs Wooden Roadway - Parking Spaces Set

A roadway set can be started fairly simply with the most basic set, My First Roadway which is a fantastic toy for a toddler, who will love the chance to slot together the road pieces to create a transport system for the small wooden cars to be pushed along. The Figure of Eight Roadway Set includes people, wooden houses and the all important bridge for wizzing the cars down!

As well as roadway sets, this range also includes roadway pieces in a variety of sizes, for extending existing sets and a selection of bridges and tunnels. The Countryside Bridge is particularly fantastic for running a railway under which can later meet the road at a level crossing for a really large and imaginative road and rail track, the design of which will stretch and encourage a child’s (and parent’s!) imagination.

Great new wooden jigsaws range! Alphabet Jigsaws

Tuesday, June 14th, 2011

Having seen a lot of jigsaws pass through my house, having sat on the floor and endlessly assisted children in finding and slotting in  pieces, I was pleasantly surprised to find that when the new Alphabet Jigsaws range arrived, I was struck by it’s uniqueness. Putting the beautiful range of designs and ecological ethics aside for a moment, a really great feature of the Alphabet Jigsaw range is that each jigsaw comes with its own cotton drawstring bag so tidying up is easier and storage is much longer lasting than a cardboard box, which inevitably ends up squished and covered in Sellotape.

I was instantly drawn to the solar system jigsaw which features happy little astronauts, rockets and all the planets, named and bearing the initial letter of their name as a fantastic way to introduce the concept of outer space and start an interest in the solar system.

Each Alphabet Jigsaw is hand cut from carefully sourced, sustainably grown wood and hand painted using paints that are child safe and non-toxic. Therefore each puzzle is individual and really a work of art. This can clearly be seen in the Sun and Moon Jigsaw which has the most delightful attention to detail in the creatures featured in it. The Map Jigsaws are a great geographical teaching tool for older children. Choose from either the smaller, regional Map of UK Jigsaw or the larger and more complex Map of the World Jigsaw.

Great Savings on Djeco Toys & Craft Kits in May

Wednesday, May 4th, 2011

Djeco 15% off in May

Djeco is one of our absolute favourite ranges and in the year since we started stocking it, our house has filled up with their craft kits and kitchen toys. To celebrate our one year anniversary with them, we’re offering 15% off the whole range through May.

Djeco Crafts are truly wonderful, kits which are absolutely filled with things to do and the finished product is always wonderful. We recently entertained 30 children with the amazing Foam Mosaic Kits, which are wonderfully easy to use, with fantastic colours and designs, while the Sand Art kits have been a massive success.

Djeco History Jigsaw

Djeco History Jigsaw

In the Jigsaws and Games section, there is something for everyone from Chess and Ludo to simple and more complex, educational jigsaws. The History Spiral has been very popular with our eldest daughter, who loves not only the challenge of a circular jigsaw but still really enjoys picking out the different eras.

Djeco Cubanimo

While there are sadly no toddlers or babies in the house any more, we did recently give the Cubanimo set to our little nephew – at 9 months old, he is apparently really loving it and it was out for playing with when we went to visit this weekend :)

Daisy's Toy Market Stall

Daisy's Toy Market Stall

Back at our house, 6 year old Josie was lucky enough to get Daisy’s Play Kitchen and Toy Market Stall for Christmas; a perfect addition to any wooden play food collection. She has really loved all the imaginative games she has played with them.

I really can’t fault the Djeco range at all; beautifully made, well thought out and great value at the best of times, we really hope you’ll enjoy making the most of the special offer.

Free Shipping on Moulin Roty

Wednesday, February 16th, 2011

We’ve be stocking the amazing Moulin Roty range for over 2 years now at PlayMerrily Toys and it is loved by both us and our customers. It has the distinction of being one of the few brands which cross all three of our websites, with the sewing kits on CraftMerrily & the dolls featuring over at JollyDollies. But I love taking a look at the complete range on our main site, because something about these wonderful classic toys just takes my breath away.

We’ve had tremendous success with the Moulin Roty Ma Poupee range over the last couple of years. A wholesome version of the typical fashion doll, Alice, Clarisse & Louise have taken over from Nanou and her sisters. With young girl figures and beautiful clothing, they make wonderful playmates.

Malo the Rabbit & Lila the Mouse make wonderful Baby Gifts for a newborn or a toddler. Each comes with their own range of accessories, including rattles and comfort blankets. Malo has a sister rabbit, Mila the Bunny, also dressed in blue, for the less pink mummy!

The La Grande Famille collection, also known as the Moulin Big Happy Family, have been popular for many years and their animal toys now come in 16 different styles. In addition to the standard soft toy/doll, they now also come as first hand puppets which are wonderful for encouraging speech and communication skills and are brilliant when paired with the child’s favour Grande Famille toy. We particularly love Sylvain the rabbit…

…who is also available as a gift boxed baby comforter.

The Jolis Pas Beaux have been an instant hit since their arrival. In a mixture of textures and different coloured fabrics, this quirky, raggle taggle bunch are quite literally “Pretty Ugly“. That hasn’t stopped people loving them and they are growing in popularity all the time as that ’slightly different’ baby gift.

Leonie the Teddy Bear has a special place in the PlayMerrily household; one of our daughters gave Leonie as a present to Freddie, our son, when he was born. After he died, Leonie was a beautiful thing for Amelie to keep as a memory and her soft snuggly fur makes her a lovely armful of cuddle when Amelie is sad. I hope other Leonie’s get to befriend children in happier times, but she is certainly much loved around here.

Finally we are delighted to now be stocking the Toys of Yesterday range, including their wonderful natural wood toy cooker which includes all the pictured accessories, plus 2 amazing rocking horses and a wicker dolls pram.

When you run a toy shop and have children of your own too, getting the toys out to play is almost irresistible – but we mostly have to do it when the children aren’t around or we would end up with one of everything at home! However, tiptoeing into work the other day, I couldn’t help noticing the toys on the top shelf had been out and about… perhaps the top shelf in the top shop provokes the same behaviour as the back seat of the school bus!

Moulin Roty goods have free shipping throughout February and March.

Great Savings on Heimess Baby Toys at PlayMerrily

Monday, January 31st, 2011

This month, we are offering a fantastic 20% off the entire Heimess range at PlayMerrily Toys, helping you to get set up for the new year with gorgeous and useful baby accessories at a great value price.

We love Heimess for many reasons; the colours are wonderful, the ranges are attractive and diverse and the toys themselves are wonderful quality. Made from beautiful wood and finished in saliva-resistant paint which is entirely non-toxic, these toys will resist sucking, chewing and bashing. There are ranges like the Pink Mouse and Mermaid collection, which are gorgeous for girls and the Car and Boat ranges which are brilliant for boys but many of the clips and chains are also designed to be unisex and have a rainbow of appealing colours.

Heimess are most famous for the wooden dummy chains but these are not just useful for dummies and are an ideal way to attach toys and books to a pushchair or pram. The pram chains and rattles make wonderful first toys.

You can save a huge 20% across the entire range in February – enjoy!

Quadrilla – a huge hit with our girls!

Thursday, January 20th, 2011

Last year we began selling Quadrilla, a wooden modular marble run range that has been an instant hit. When relatives gave our girls money this year, we thought it was an ideal opportunity to indulge in some for ourselves and the girls (ages 12 down to 6) we incredibly pleased by the present.

They made a video, which we thought you might enjoy.

As a parent and home educator, as well as a toy retailer, I’m always looking at products from the pont of view of a parent who likes to see real play value being given by a toy. Something like Quadrilla is an investment, a toy which will last and last and should still be there for your grandchildren. I think it is obvious that a huge amount of fun was being had and they played together for hours.

Quadrilla offers considerable challenges. The colour, step by step instruction take patience and thought – achievable but effort provoking – and the models need you to think and explore how best to use them. The pace is fun and encourage not only races but imaginative games and there are  plenty of ideas in the books, plus a website for more. Once they move on to making tracks for themselves, they need to be able to analyse how the sets work and explore the properties of the different pieces, problem solving as they go. And it looks (and smells!) gorgeous, a really beautiful toy.

I think the giggles they had made it more than worthwhile though.

We gave our girls the Melody Set, which has musical bars that chime as the marbles hit them and the Twist Set but there are sets for all budgets and plenty of add ons, so you can build your collection up as your budget allows.
