Literacy

Learning to read is a fundamental skill that we all need and for children who are going to school, there is a huge benefit in having some familiarity with letters and simple words when they start. As words are all around us, having simple literacy toys in the home is a great way to enrich a child's environment and enable them to begin to recognise and use these essential building blocks of life. From colourful alphabet blocks for babies and toddlers, to wipeable writing boards from Alex Toys and beautiful wooden letters in upper and lower case, there is huge scope for learning early literacy skills without ever sitting down to a lesson. Our soft and squashy letters from the wonderful Rubbabu range are particularly satisfying to hold and play with.

Another great great way to encourage early literacy and letter confidence is to incorporate letter learning into craft projects around the home. Make letters and simple words from playdough, dough or Fimo using these great ABC pastry cutters, or make hama bead letters using this specially designed board. We also sell several wonderful alphabet and spelling tablemats from Crocodile Creek, a great way to encourage children to gradually absorb letters and the alphabet from an early age and providing great conversation starters.
